Spiritual ranks are here to serve others (Matthew 20:25-27). Each spiritual rank carries a different level of authority (Matthew 8:5-10) and thus also of responsibility (Luke 12:48).
The authority accompanying a spiritual rank can be recognized by spiritual beings who are in the spiritual realm (Acts 19:13-16).
There are several principles to apply in order to increase in spiritual ranks:
- The spiritual rank can increase by working faithfully with what is already given (Matthew 25:21, 1 Timothy 1:12).
- The spiritual rank can increase proportionally with the amount of work done (Luke 19:16-19).
Spiritual ranks are increased under these principles because:
- Someone trustworthy with a little will also be with more (Luke 16:10).
- Whoever has, it will be given to him (Matthew 13:12).
You can find more details below:
Spiritual ranks are here to serve others:
Matthew 20:
It is written that "Jesus, having-summoned them, said, “You-know that the rulers (of) the Gentiles are-lording-over them, and the great (ones) are exercising-authority-over them. It-shall not be so among you. But whoever wants to-become GREAT among you shall-be YOUR SERVANT, and whoever wants to-be FIRST among you shall-be your SLAVE" (Matthew 20:25-27).
The greater the spiritual rank, the greater is the person serving others.
Different levels of authority exist:
Matthew 8:
It is written about Jesus that "(a) centurion came to Him, appealing-to Him and saying, “Master, my servant has-been-put in the house paralyzed, being-tormented terribly”. And He-says (to) him, “Having-come, I will-cure him”. And having-responded, the centurion said, “Master, I-am not fit that You-should-come-in under my roof. But only speak (it in a) word and my servant will-be-healed. For I also am (a) man UNDER AUTHORITY, HAVING SOLDIERS UNDER MYSELF. And I-SAY (TO) THIS (ONE), ‘GO!’ AND HE-GOES; and (to) another, ‘Come!’ and he-comes; and (to) my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he-does (it)”. Now having-heard, Jesus marveled, and said (to) the (ones) following, “Truly I-say (to) you, with no one in Israel did-I-find so-great (a) faith!" (Matthew 8:5-10).
When a person is under someone else in authority, that person needs to carry the orders of that other person (if the orders are in accordance with the highest authority, the LORD God).
The centurion here also recognized that spiritually Jesus was higher in rank than him, calling Jesus also "Master" (Matthew 8:6), as he said to just speak a word to him and he passes the word, as if implying being under Jesus in authority.
Different levels of responsibility exist:
Ezekiel 33:
It is written: "If the WATCHMAN sees the sword coming and DOES NOT BLOW THE TRUMPET [...] his blood I will REQUIRE at the watchman's hand" (Ezekiel 33:6).
Here the watchman had great responsibilities, where great things can be required of him if he does not hold his responsibilities.
Luke 12:
Jesus said: "Everyone to whom much was given, of him MUCH WILL BE REQUIRED" (Luke 12:48).
The more someone has been given a greater spiritual rank, the greater responsibility someone will be required to hold.
The authority accompanying a spiritual rank can be recognized by spiritual beings:
It is written that "some (of) the JEWISH EXORCISTS going-around attempted to-name the name (of) the Lord Jesus over the (ones) having the evil spirits, saying, “I-adjure you (by) the Jesus Whom Paul is-proclaiming”. Now there-were seven sons (of a) certain Sceva, (a) Jewish chief-priest, doing this. But having-responded, THE EVIL SPIRIT SAID (to) them, “I-KNOW JESUS AND KNOW-ABOUT PAUL, BUT WHO ARE-YOU?” And the man in whom was the evil spirit, having-leaped on them, HAVING-SUBDUED BOTH (OF THEM), PREVAILED against them" (Acts 19:13-16).
Here the evil spirit, a spiritual being in the spiritual realm, recognized the spiritual rank of Jesus, as they knew Him, and of Paul, as they knew about him, but they did not know about the ones in front of them, and so they subdued them, showing that they had a greater authority than them in the spiritual realm (in contrast with Jesus or Paul who did cast out many evil spirits from people without being subdued, having both a higher authority).
The spiritual rank can increase by working faithfully with what is already given:
Matthew 25:
Jesus said: "(it is) just-like (a) man going-on-a-journey, he-called (his) own slaves and handed-over his possessions (to) them. And he-gave five talents (to) one" (Matthew 25:14-15) and "the (one) having-received the five talents WORKED WITH THEM and gained another five" (Matthew 25:16) so the man said to this slave: "Well done, good and faithful servant. YOU HAVE BEEN FAITHFUL OVER A LITTLE; I WILL SET YOU OVER MUCH" (Matthew 25:21).
Here on the condition of being FAITHFUL over what is already given by WORKING with that, someone can then increase in rank (by being given more).
1 Timothy 1:
Paul wrote: "I have gratitude to Christ Jesus our Lord, the One having strengthened me, because HE REGARDED ME TRUSTWORTHY, having APPOINTED ME FOR MINISTRY" (1 Timothy 1:12).
Here on the condition of being REGARDED TRUSTWORHTY, Paul was appointed for ministry (and thus increased in rank by being given more).
The spiritual rank can increase proportionally with the amount of work done:
Luke 19:
Jesus said: "(A) certain well-born man traveled to (a) distant country to-receive (a) kingdom (for) himself, and to-return. And having-called TEN (of) his (own) SLAVES , he-gave them TEN MINAS and said to them, ‘DO-BUSINESS while I-am-coming’." (Luke 19:12-13).
All the slaves were given the same amount of mina and were told to do business.
Jesus then said: "And it-came-about at his return, having-received the kingdom, that he-said (that) these slaves (to) whom he-had-given the money (should) be-called (to) him in-order-that he-might-come-to-know what they gained-through-doing-business. And the FIRST (one) arrived, saying, ‘Lord, YOUR MINA EARNED TEN MINAS’. And he-said (to) him, ‘Very-well (done), good slave. Because you-proved-to-be faithful in (a) very-little (thing), BE HAVING AUTHORITY OVER TEN CITIES’." (Luke 19:15-17).
Here with one mina the first slave earned ten minas and thus increasing in rank by being given authority over ten cities. The rank was proportional to the amount earned.
Jesus then said: "And the SECOND (one) came, saying, ‘YOUR MINA, lord, MADE FIVE MINAS’. And he-said also (to) this (one), ‘And you, BE OVER FIVE CITIES’." (Luke 19:18-19).
Here with one mina the second slave earned five minas and thus increasing in rank by being given authority over five cities. The rank was proportional to the amount earned.
Spiritual ranks are granted under these principles because:
Someone trustworthy with a little will also be with more:
Jesus said: "The (one) trustworthy in (a) very-little (thing) IS ALSO TRUSTWORTHY IN MUCH. And the (one) unrighteous in (a) very-little (thing) is also unrighteous in much" (Luke 16:10).
Whoever has, it will be given to him:
Jesus said: "whoever HAS, IT-WILL-BE-GIVEN (TO) HIM, and he-will-be-caused-to-abound. But whoever does not have, even what he-has will-be-taken-away from him" (Matthew 13:12).
