"Angels" can be distinct from "people":

The Greek word for "angel" is actually more accurately translated as "MESSENGER" [aggelos 32 in Greek], as it comes from the Greek word for "message" [aggelia 31 in Greek]. This word can actually be applied to humans, as for example it is written about "the MESSENGERS [aggelos 32 in Greek] (of) John" (Luke 7:24).

Can people function as "messengers" in the spiritual realm?

A human has a human SPIRIT. 

Messengers (angels) from heaven are SPIRIT, as it is written that "MESSENGERS [aggelos 32 in Greek]" (Hebrews 1:13) are "SPIRITS" (Hebrews 1:14).

A human can be sent from the throne of God in the spiritual realm, as it is written about Isaiah: "I saw the LORD sitting on a high and having been exalted THRONE" (Isaiah 6:1), "And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I SEND, and who will go to this people?” And I said, behold, “I am here; SEND ME!” And He said, “GO, and say to this people [...]" (Isaiah 6:8-9).

A messenger (angel) from heaven can be sent from the throne of God in the spiritual realm, as it is written that "the MESSENGER [aggelos 32 in Greek] said (to) him, “I am Gabriel, the (one) STANDING IN-THE-PRESENCE-OF GOD. And I-WAS-SENT-FORTH to-speak to you" (Luke 1:19).

A human can technically function as a messenger. Furthermore, a human is also able to go in the spiritual realm, where messengers (angels) from heaven function.

It is written: "(a) MESSENGER [aggelos 32 in Greek] (of the) Lord spoke to Philip saying, “ARISE AND GO TOWARD (THE) SOUTH on the road going-down from Jerusalem to Gaza”" (Acts 8:26).

Giving understanding to humans:

It is written in Luke: "the MESSENGER [aggelos 32 in Greek] said (to) him, “I am Gabriel" (Luke 1:19). In Daniel it is written about "Gabriel, bringing with quickness, came near to me in the hour of the evening sacrifice. And he came, and spoke with me, and said, “O Daniel, I just now came out TO SHOW TO YOU UNDERSTANDING" (Daniel 9:21-22).

Making known future things to humans:

It is written in Jude about "Michael the ARCH-MESSENGER" (Jude 1:9). In Daniel it is written: "Michael, one of the first princes, came to help me; and I left him there with the commander of the king of the Persians. And he said to me to go TO MAKE KNOWN TO YOU WHAT WILL MEET YOUR PEOPLE at the last of the days; for the vision is yet for days”" (Daniel 10:13-14).

Protecting humans:

Guarding humans in their ways:

Messengers from heaven can guard humans in their ways, as it is written: "to His MESSENGERS [malak 4397 in Hebrew] He will give orders concerning you, TO GUARD YOU IN ALL YOUR WAYS" (Psalms 91:11).

Fighting to help humans:

It is written in Jude about "Michael the ARCH-MESSENGER" (Jude 1:9). In Daniel it is written: "the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but Michael, one of the first princes, CAME TO HELP ME" (Daniel 10:13-14). Messengers can fight in the spiritual realm against spiritual adversaries, as it is written: "Michael and his MESSENGERS [aggelos 32 in Greek] (went) TO-FIGHT against the dragon" (Revelation 12:7).

Rescuing humans:

Peter said: "the Lord sent-out His MESSENGER [aggelos 32 in Greek] and RESCUED ME from (the) hand (of) Herod" (Acts 12:11).

Carrying humans in the spiritual realm:

Messengers from heaven can carry humans in the spiritual realm, as it is written: "ONE of the seven MESSENGERS [aggelos 32 in Greek]" (Revelation 17:1), "HE-CARRIED ME AWAY IN (THE) SPIRIT TO (A) WILDERNESS" (Revelation 17:3).
